Extract Nails/Spikes

In the world of aerial mapping and surveying, ensuring that your ground control points remain secure during data collection is crucial. However, once the survey is complete, removing the spikes used to anchor DronePoints targets can be a challenge. We are currently developing a specialized removal tool to make this process fast and easy. In the meantime, here are some recommended methods for successfully removing DronePoints spikes from the ground while limiting damage to the targets.

Recommended Extraction Method

Using Paracord or Strong Line:

  1. Select the Right Material: Use a strong but thin paracord or another type of durable line that can fit between the target and the nail head. The material should be able to withstand the force needed to pull the spike out without breaking. In a pinch, clients have had success using an extra pair of boot laces.
  2. Loop Around the Spike Head: Create a loop with the paracord and securely wrap it around the spike or nail head. Ensure that the loop is tight and positioned just below the head of the spike.
  3. Apply Upward Force: Grip both ends of the paracord firmly. Apply steady, upward force to pull the spike straight out of the ground. Slight lateral movement of the spike back and forth may actually help loosen the spike, allowing for easier extraction. Avoid applying excessive lateral force to prevent bending the spike or damaging the target.

Tips for Effective Extraction

  • Leverage: If the spike is deeply embedded, using a lever tool such as a crowbar or a specialized pulling device can provide additional leverage. Place the lever under the paracord loop and gently pry upward. Take care not to damage the target here.
  • Safety: Always wear gloves to protect your hands from potential injury and ensure a better grip on the paracord or line.

Preventing Damage

Carefully extracting the spike will help preserve the integrity of the DronePoints target, allowing it to be reused. While our targets are made with eco-conscious materials designed to biodegrade, they can still be reused if handled properly during removal.

    Upcoming Removal Tool

We understand the need for a more efficient and user-friendly method of spike extraction. That’s why we’re excited to announce that DronePoints is developing a specialized removal tool designed specifically for our spikes. This tool will make the removal process quicker, safer, and more convenient. Stay tuned for updates on its availability.

    Conclusion

Proper extraction of spikes is essential to maintain the integrity of your ground control points and ensure the accuracy of your data collection. By using the recommended methods above, you can efficiently remove spikes without damaging your equipment or the targets. We appreciate your patience as we work on providing you with an even better solution in the near future.
